Alastair Shipman
Location: West London

I predominantly teach:
SATII Maths (I and II), SATII Physics
I also teach:
SATI Maths
Experience
I started off with very informal tutoring with my friends during AS and A level year, teaching them A level Maths almost as I learnt it. This moved on to (also quite informal) tutoring family friends, from Foundation Level GCSE Maths to A level maths.
At University I signed up with an organisation called Jacari. This group tutors children that speak English as a second language. I feel this puts me in a special position, as I am put in situations that most tutors aren't, in that I am teaching the very basics to older children. This poses several issues, and is a great challenge that I enjoy.
Biography
I'm currently a Scholar at Oxford University, studying Engineering, having graduated as a prefect from St. Paul's School.
I came out of school with 10 GCSEs (9A* grade, 1 A), an AS level in Italian, and 4 A levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics (all attained with 90% or more). I also achieved an 800 in SAT Maths Level II.
I also took part in many extra-curricular activities, including the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, Proshare and Young Enterprise. I was subsequently picked as a Prime Minister's Global Fellow, going to China as a representative of England.
I play sport to a very high level, having represented Great Britain for rowing and having played rugby for Wasps Junior Academy. I now play rugby league for Oxford University, gaining a Blue for it in 2012.
Personal Approach
In my approach, I try to establish a rapport with the tutee. Finding a way to relate makes both teaching and learning a lot more productive and enjoyable.
In my experience, if this is established between the tutee and tutor, then the lessons can be a lot more focussed, and goals can be more easily achieved.
Testimonials
Alastair has been tutoring my daughter for G.C.S.E. maths this year. He has proved to be very patient and has encouraged her to feel increasingly confident in her study of the subject. She has enjoyed the sessions with him and this is to his credit as it is not a subject which she finds easy. I would therefore recommend him highly as a maths tutor.
