Experience
I took part in a mentoring programme and have helped many people navigate the intricacies of SATs, AP exams, admissions essays and applications. Because I have myself gone through the US admissions process and researched universities extensively, I’m in a good position to advise on university choice.
I took a month-long Trinity TESOL course (teaching English as a second language) in Seville in 2008, which included modules on teaching method and pedagogy, as well as one-to-one teaching practice. After receiving my TESOL certificate, I taught English full time at Stafford House, a summer school in London to students aged 13-18, so I am comfortable tutoring a range of ages and abilities.
Biography
I grew up in the US and attended Patuxent High School in Maryland and am therefore very familiar with the US Advanced Placement courses and SATs. I was fortunate to get perfect scores for both the SATs and all the AP exams. I applied for university in the US and Canada and went to McGill University for a year before transferring to the London School of Economics, where I attained a First Class BSc in International Relations. Since I have gone through the lengthy process of US admissions, I know how they compare to the UCAS system – far more time-consuming! I've also spent two years in France, and have an advanced proficiency certificate (which qualifies me to attend a French university).
Personal Approach
Having sat countless exams in the US, Canada, the UK, and France, I know that every exam is different and requires a correspondingly unique approach. Often, the difference between a good grade and an excellent grade is that extra bit of strategic intelligence. In my approach to tutoring others, I do of course recognize the importance of being able to understand the subject matter. But, in my experience, exam strategy is often overlooked or sidelined by both tutor and pupil. Every pupil that I tutor comes away not only with an understanding of the subject matter but also with a developed sense of exam strategy. It is not a skill that people pick up easily – it is one that is honed with time and practice.
